We all look forward to summer vacation. It’s our time to take a break from school, hang out with family and friends, earn money from a part-time job, and just relax!
Summer is also a great time to explore your college interests! Did you know that many colleges offer pre-college summer programs for high school students? A pre-college summer program is an opportunity for students to visit college campuses, engage in their academic interests and network with fellow students. Some programs have a residential option allowing students to live in on-campus to get a glimpse of college life and others have the opportunity to take a college course for credit! Furthermore, your participation is a great way to “test the waters” and see if a particular college or major is your fit.
Before you start your research and exploring the various programs available to students, think about what you are looking to get out of the experience. Do you want to participate in a STEM-related program or one that pertains to fine arts? Do you want to stay local so you can commute or travel to another state? Do you want a program that lasts a few days or weeks? If you don’t know where to begin, talk to your high school counselor. Your counselor may already have a list of pre-college summer programs for you to explore. Teachers are another great resource for you to utilize. Of course, you can go straight to a college’s website or you can Google opportunities, but be prepared to numerous results.
Many programs require an application and because deadlines vary, it’s ideal to begin researching early. There may also be a program cost, some of which can be expensive. Please do not let cost discourage you from applying. There are programs with partial and/or full scholarships available on a first-come, first-served basis, which is another reason to apply early!
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, please keep in mind that summer programs may be held virtually, in-person, or even postponed. If you unable to participate in a pre-college summer program, please do not stress. There are other ways (ex: volunteering, working part-time, playing sports, hobbies, etc.) to stay productive and engaged. Whatever you decide, make it a wonderful and safe summer!
